The results are in for the K'Nex Catapult Challenge. The team with the catapult that went the farthest distance of 63 inches is Aven Hajek, Cole Lewis, & Arie Tevepaugh; least amount of pieces used which was 17 pieces created by Samuel Decker; and the Best Designed Catapult was created by Nico Cesario. These students need to come to the Media Center to claim their prize. Thank you to all who entered.
The next woman who we will spotlight during Women's History Month is Roberta Flack. Roberta Cleopatra Flack was a Grammy-winning American singer and pianist who blended genres like Rhythm & Blues, folk, jazz, and pop in her ballads. Flack was a skilled classical pianist who often sang from the piano bench. She mentored several other artists. “So see every opportunity as golden, and keep your eyes on the prize - yours, not anybody else’s.” Roberta Flack. The reader for today was Lillian Boyd. There will be a video presented in the Media Center today concerning Roberta Flack’s life.

As we kick off our recognition of Women's History Month, let us remember Barbara McClintock. McClintock was an American scientist and cytogeneticist who was awarded the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. She received her PhD in botany from Cornell University. It was there that McClintock studied chromosomes and how they change during reproduction in maize. Her study of chromosomes was the focus of her research for the rest of her life. McClintock was known for discovering “jumping genes”. “If you know you are on the right track, if you have this inner knowledge, then nobody can turn you off . . . no matter what they say.” Barbara McClintock. We were unable to get to 7th grade lunch to pull a name last Friday from our positive behavior box for the month of February. Random Acts of Kindness is all about noticing and celebrating the small (and big!) ways students show care, respect, and compassion for others each day. Congratulations to the Harmon Quiz Bowl team who attended their final tournament of the season at Copley. Our top team came in 3rd place. This 7th grade team included Captain Billy Liu, Manvi Fnu, Hayden Savage, & Warner Adamic. The other 7th grade team included Captain Anna Fagan, Isabella Sexton, Ryan Kolli, & Aniket Panigrahi. Former Quiz Bowl member and 9th grader, Dan Banks, came back to help coach the team for the day. There were two six grade teams as well. The first team included Captain Arjun Agarwal and team members Rajeev Kumar, Avyukt Aravindh, Girisha Gupta, Ranveer Anand, & Wilson Robinson. The other team included Captain Chelsea Banks and team members Ahilan Prabashkumar, Abhinov Pabbisetty, Avery Lasky, Sophia Lasky, Gianna Dalesandro, & Liam Keating.
On Friday, February 27 the Aurora Orchestra Association held its 27th Annual Aurora Orchestra Solo Competition. The following Harmon students won this year’s competition: 6th Grade Orchestra Solo Division: 3rd place (tie) – Sri Harshith Chandra and Avyukt Aravindh; 2nd place - Eric Jiang; & 1st place - Tom Zidones. 6th Grade Duet Division: 3rd place - Michael O’Tool and Rajeev Kumar; 2nd place – Nihira Teluru and Aliye Acar; & 1st place (tie) – Daniel Borrero and Eric Jiang and 1st place - Ranveer Anand and Avuykt Arvhindah. 7th Grade Orchestra Solo Division: 3rd place (tie) – Madelyn Erhard and Miles Miller; 2nd place - Cooper Newbauer; & 1st place (tie) - Daniel Jong and Daisy Yates; 7th Grade Duet Division; 3rd place - Maddie Harvey and Autumn Heinze; 2nd place – Isabella Sexton and Austin Wadolowski; & 1st place (tie) – Daisy Yates and Madelyn Erhard and 1st place – Anna Stefano and Gioia Doria. 8th Grade Orchestra Solo Division: 3rd place – Savannah Watkins and Bentley Bahr; 2nd place – Tevona Sesuraj; 1st place – Evelyn Otto and Riya Sureshbabu; 8th Grade Duet Division: 3rd place - Sage Braydich and Bethany Macsurak; 3rd place - Kat Dudash and Aubrey Maione; 2nd place – Cayden McDowell and Prem Pulla; & 1st place – Tevona Sesuraj and Riya Sureshbabu. Congratulations to all of the winners. All of the students who participated did a fantastic job and represented Aurora well.

All football players: Off-season lifting will begin today from 2:45 to 4:45. Immediately after school, please walk safely from Harmon to the AHS Auxiliary Gym. Coaches will be there to direct you to the appropriate locker room. Be sure to bring a change of workout clothes, separate workout shoes—especially if your school shoes are dirty or muddy—and a lock to secure your clothes and bookbag. Lifting will take place every Monday, Wednesday, & Friday. Now that middle school wrestling and basketball are finished, we expect all players to attend. Even if you plan to participate in track in a few weeks, you should attend lifting until that time. During the first week, we will focus on learning proper technique and completing all lifts safely. Sessions will be led by our certified strength coach, Tom Wymer, along with the football coaching staff. .If you have any questions, please see Coach Wervey or Coach Keckan.

To close our Black History Month we are featuring Allyson Felix. Allyson Michelle Felix is a retired American track and field athlete. Felix is the most decorated athlete, male or female, in World Athletics Championships history with 20 career medals. With a combined Olympic and World Championship total of 31 medals, she is also the overall most decorated athlete in track and field history. “Never stop fighting, you are here for a reason and your purpose is bigger than you can imagine. For Black History enrichment this week we are featuring Victor Glover. Victor Jerome Glover, Jr. is a NASA astronaut who has spent 167 days, 6 hours, and 29 minutes in space. He was on the first operational flight of the SpaceX Crew Dragon to the International Space Station. Glover is currently assigned as the pilot of NASA’s Artemis II mission to the moon, and will be the first Black man to travel to the Moon. “Earth is amazing, it’s beautiful, it protects us, and so we should work hard to protect it.” Victor J. Glover. The reader for today was Wasay Yasser. There will be a video presented in the media center today concerning Victor Glover's life.
On Saturday, February 14 seven students from the Speech team attended their final Speech Competition of the season at Mayfield High School. In the Middle School Declamation competition 7th graders Arisha Hussain and Ayona Sen and first time tournament participant 6th grader, Aadhya Bhogasamudram, competed against 14 other students. In the Middle School Original Oratory competition 6th graders Ahilan Prakashkumar, Girisha Gupta, and first time tournament participant, Avyukt Aravindh, competed against 18 other students AND in the Middle School Competition for Interpretation 7th grader Daisy Yates came in 3rd place out of 16 students earning another trophy for her excellent efforts.
Congratulations to the wrestlers that qualified for the OAC Middle School State Wrestling Tournament over the weekend! Wrestlers that placed in the top six at their District qualified for the State Tournament. 7th grader Graham Mitchell placed 4th and 8th grader Jackson Orrill placed 5th. Good luck to them at the state tournament in March!
